Black Christian women are in a unique position to impact abortion in the African-American community. Here’s why:
As Christians equipped with the Holy Spirit, you have the spiritual ability to understand the Truths about abortion-both the natural truths and the spiritual truths. Abortion causes death, both physical (natural) and spiritual. It results in physical death of the unborn child but causes a level of spiritual death within the woman who chooses the abortion. Non-Christians might be able to understand the physical aspect of death, but not the spiritual aspects of it because spiritual truths can only be spiritually understood. [1 Cor. 2:14]
As Black Christians, you have the cultural experience to understand the unique feelings and mentalities another Black woman might have that contribute to her decision to have an abortion, and also to her decision to embrace theories of reproductive rights. The concept of rights is a common hallmark of the Black experience in America. But in understanding her thoughts, you can also share with her the Biblical view of rights, how they are identified, and how they should and should not be exercised.
As women, you have the emotional design to empathize with women who have made decisions out of fear or hopelessness, and to feel the heart of God towards the children whose lives have been lost. You can touch another woman’s heart as you help her understand her significance in sustaining life in the Black community, and as you help her see the crushing impact of abortion on our people. You can also cry out in prayer for restoration of our community.
Black Christian women have power. Will you use this threefold power of spiritual ability, cultural experience, and emotional design to help turn the Black community back to obedience to God in matters of life and death? Dayton Black Americans for Life is committed to taking action and to supporting you as you take action. Hopefully you will join us but if not, consider these words of Mordecai to Esther:
Don’t think for a moment that because you’re in the palace [suburbs, church, corporate world] you will escape when all other Jews [African Americans] are killed. If you keep quiet at a time like this, deliverance and relief for the Jews [African Americans] will arise from some other place, but you and your relatives will die. Who knows if perhaps you were made queen [an elder, pastor, CEO, mother, lawyer, writer] for just such a time as this?
Esther 4:13, 14 [text in brackets added to make the verse real to our situation]
